What to Pack for an Outdoor Adventure When Kids Have Diverse Needs

The first rule of a good adventure is to always expect the unexpected. When you’re working with youth who have diverse needs — social, cognitive, and physical — you know that the unexpected can be the norm, not the exception. This calls for a little bit of preparation. Some extra gear can make all the difference when it comes to having a safe, enjoyable, meaningful experience for everyone involved.

In a lot of cases, the right preparation is a matter of trial and error. You were unprepared in the past, and now you know what mistakes not to make again. But that’s the hard way, and nobody wants to learn like that! Instead, it’s best to think ahead.

Of course, not every piece of gear is going to be necessary for every adventure. Based on what the weather looks like, how long you’ll be out there, or what a friend is bringing and might be able to share with you, it could be best to leave some stuff at home and pack a little bit lighter.

Here are some ideas for gear that may end up being useful on a long day outside:

Moisture-wicking layers: Wearing the right attire can make all the difference, especially when kids often feel most secure and comfortable in clothing that is soft and well-fitting. Choose clothing they’ve worn before so you know it won’t irritate them.

Extra socks and shoes: Wet or uncomfortable shoes can quickly put a damper on the adventure. A second pair of socks (or even a pair of slippers for car rides) can go a long way in keeping children comfortable.

Rain gear or poncho: Weather can be unpredictable sometimes, so it’s always good to be prepared. A light poncho or rain jacket is great for staying dry when the weather calls for rain.

Sunglasses or hat: If your child is sensitive to bright light, sunglasses or a wide-brimmed hat can make a big difference in comfort.

Fidget Toys: Small, portable toys can be great for soothing children during transitions or moments of waiting. Just make sure it’s nothing that will be too distracting, because adventures often require everyone to pay attention to instructions or safety warnings.

A favorite snack: Bring a variety of familiar snacks, including options that are high-energy (like trail mix) and low-sensory (like plain crackers).

Water bottle: Look for a water bottle that’s easy for your child to hold and sip from. Some may prefer a straw attachment, while others prefer a spout.

Noise-canceling headphones: Ideal for reducing the impact of loud or sudden sounds. But the same rule with fidget toys applies here: Headphones shouldn’t be a distraction when children are supposed to be paying attention.

Small first aid kit: Include basics like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any additional supplies specific to your child’s needs. You usually only need one first aid kit per group, so check with friends or adventure partners first to see whether they have one, so you’re not doubling up on baggage.

Emergency medications: If your child has allergies, asthma, or other health conditions, make sure to bring necessary medications, like an EpiPen or inhaler.

Sunscreen and bug spray: Skin sensitivities vary, so consider a hypoallergenic, gentle sunscreen and bug repellent suitable for sensitive skin.

Blanket or towel: This can provide a clean, dry spot to sit if your child needs a break.

Hand sanitizer or wipes: Outdoor adventures can be messy, and having wipes on hand can make things a bit easier.
